Company History

The entity was established in 1943 as the Sheltered Employment Factories, for the sole purpose of creating employment for ex-serviceman and women who could not secure employment in the labour market due to barriers that prevented their participation.

The entity was established in terms of a cabinet memorandum that also provided for grant funding to be made available to the factories in order to subsidize operations. The entity has 13 factories located in 8 of the 9 provinces in South Africa, with Mpumalanga currently being the only province without a factory.

Until 1999 the entity enjoyed “Preferential Procurement Status” that meant all government departments procured their office and school furniture as well as hospital linen and uniforms from the us. This translated into the entity being able to provide work opportunities to at least 3000 persons with disabilities.

Legal Identity and Legislative Mandate

The Employment Services Act 4 of 2014 now establishes the entity as the Supported Employment Enterprises (SEE) to promote work and employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.
